What college coaches scout for in a Running Back:
Coach Chris Barclay, Louisville
“In my Running Backs I look for instincts, vision, the ability to make defenders miss in tight spaces, foot speed, quick twitch, competitiveness & contact balance just to name a few.
I love an athlete because the more jobs he does, the more versatile he can be. Love when they do PR & KR & even play defense. He has to show ball skills too because the game is opening up & I don’t want to have dinosaurs in my room. He must evolve with the game."
Coach Deland McCullough, Las Vegas Raiders (Former RB Coach at Notre Dame)
Top End Speed – separation vs competition: Sub 4.6 40, sub 4.5 shuttle, sub 11.2 100m, sub 22.4 200m. *The smaller the RB, the higher the speed requirement.
Burst – Initial separation from defender when he cuts and or changes direction.
Inside Running – Velocity runner that reads/beats 1st level defenders. Finish runs physically.
Outside Running – Patience, (speed/burst) to read reach/kick out block, and burst upfield. Finish runs physically.
C.O.D. – changes direction without wasted motion.
Elusiveness – makes an unblocked guy miss consistently.
Ball Skills - Receiving - reaches out and catches ball with hands. Ball Handling – has good ball carrying technique.
Blocking – Willingness to take on defenders (even if technique is poor).
Y.A.C – yards after contact
Physicality – invites or avoids contact
